Incorporating Career Competencies to Evaluate a Student's Field Study Experience

Learn how The School of Social Ecology at UCI has incorporated the NACE career competencies to evaluate their Field Study Program (a graduation requirement for the undergraduate degree) to create a more inclusive and reflective process, where both students' and supervisors' experiences are revealed and documented. We want to share how this new evaluation process came to be and what we have learned from the experience thus far.

  • Ashley Vikander enjoys facilitating change in the community through her collaborations with students, colleagues, community partners, and faculty.  She is responsible for program management which includes stakeholder support, administration, risk management, public relations and student advising.  She serves on UCI’s Division of Career Pathways Internal Advisory Board. 

  • Lizet Ceja joined Social Ecology’s field study team with over 6 years of volunteer and intern management experience as a Community Partner. Now in her role as the Field Study Coordinator, she helps oversee the placement and field study experiences of over 1000 students a year in over 200+ community partner sites, and provides administrative support and advising services to students in areas of field study and career exploration. She sits on UCI’s Staff  Assembly’s Community Relations Committee.

Developing Better Partnerships Between Colleges and Employers

How can both employers and colleges work better together to make sure that students are aware of intern and career opportunities as well as to make sure that we help each other with our respective internship goals? Attendees will gain a better understanding of both the employer and college perspective and gain tips on how to better partner together. At the end of the day, both employers and colleges are working hard to make sure that their students are successful and ready to enter the workforce upon graduation.

Presenters: Jennifer-Christine Madamba, Workforce Outreach @ Sacramento Municipal Utility District; Vivian Orcasitas Dillon, M.S., Faculty Program Coordinator, Work Experience & Internship Program @ American River College

  • Vivian Orcasitas Dillon is a  Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (MS Counseling, College Counseling and Student Services, CSUN, 2006) whose career has focused on supporting underrepresented students in higher education.  Beginning in 2007, she was the Educational Opportunity (EOP) Summer Bridge Coordinator and Counselor at Sac State. In 2012, she became the Faculty Coordinator of the Work Experience & Internship Program at American River College.  In this role she develop focuses on developing partnerships with public and private employers, work with community and public agencies, and provide opportunities for students to participate in work experience and internships. Vivian has worked with a variety of employers including SMUD, Intel, Caltrans, the Sacramento Kings, and the City of Sacramento.  Vivian is also part of the ARC Design Hub team and focuses on the recruitment of students as well as the curriculum development.

Building Blocks for Internship Program Design

Summary: What are the different elements of an internship program? What should you consider when developing and implementing an internship program? This presentation will include examples from the California Community College system. This is also an opportunity to learn more about the Foundation for California Community Colleges' employer of record service, Career Catalyst, as a potential resource for your paid internship program. Attendees will gain: (1) Understanding of partners involved and structural components of an internship program; (2) Examples of funding structures used to support paid internships; (3) Best practices from the field; (4) How Career Catalyst supports programs in overcoming logistical barriers of operating paid work experiences.

  • Leti Shafer is a Workforce Development Specialist and supports the planning and development phase of paid internship programs throughout the state. Prior to joining the Foundation, Leti created and coordinated work-based learning activities for high school districts in Sonoma County.

  • Sabrina Bender is a Workforce Development Coordinator and has experience working directly with community colleges and workforce programs across the state in the day to day implementation and operations of their paid internship programs.
